Mairi MacDonald

Senior Research Nurse

Mairi’s main passions in nursing are neurosurgery and public health. By joining the EMERGE Cerebrovascular research team she hopes to use her knowledge and skills in working with neurosurgical and stroke patients while making a positive difference in the outcomes and experiences for a wide group of patients through research.

Since graduating from Edinburgh University in 2016, with an honours degree in nursing, Mairi has worked in a variety of clinical settings including working for many years in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences (DCN). Due to her keen interest in neurological and neurosurgical conditions, Mairi loved working in this area. She is currently studying a Post Graduate Certificate in Neurological Rehabilitation and Care with the University of Edinburgh, to continue to broaden her knowledge in this area.

Mairi is also highly interested in public health and gained a Diploma in Tropical Nursing from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 2018. After this, Mairi spent a year working in public health during the COVID-19 pandemic, which gave her a great experience in working with a variety of public health situations, from outbreaks of infectious diseases to toxic chemical spills.

Mairi has always had an interest in research and is very excited to join the EMERGE team carrying out studies in such an important setting. She hopes to bring her experience, passion and enthusiasm to the role to best support the research and patients.
